They say "Blind Faith" was THE FIRST super group, and there are those who say that "98 in the Shade" was Galveston's first super group! What more could you want? An edgy, blues rock band with a powerful, muscular two guitar attack that covers the best of southern rock. You'll think that bands like "Lynyrd Skynyrd" and the "Allman Brothers" have been reborn.

Nope, I'm not predicting an August cold front. We're talking the classic tunes band that I caught in T-Bone Tom's big backyard. The group featured the twin lead guitars of Marty Monte and Mark Kingsley performing with bassist Jim "Bucky" Pregler and drummer Vinnie Mejia. This veteran band (13 years as Galveston's Strand Street Saloon house band) laid down a solid, tight sound with dandy stage presence and professional presentation. First class guitarists Monte and Kingsley both took tasty rides without resorting to endless ear-piercing guitar duels. Bravo! Bravo!

"98 in the Shade" has become one of the most in demand groups on the Gulf Coast circuit since reforming in May of 2006 after an eight year hiatus. Members of the band are guitarist and vocalist Marty Monte (from "Magazine"), founding members Jim "Bucky" Pregler on bass and vocals and Mark Kingsley on guitar and vocals, and drummer/vocalist Vince Mejia (from "Joe King Carrasco"). The band offers up a mix of classic southern rock as well as original cuts from the "MP2" album released in 2004 by Pregler and Monte. The band is currently working on a new project scheduled for release in early 2007 that will include some of the previously released material as well as several new songs. Every show is concert quality. It doesn't matter where you catch them, they're on!
